“Some Things I Have Learned from Glass”
On Friday night of the IFC, Bandhu will share images and insights from his work with glass for 50 years. Along with his own glass work, themes and stories will touch on what he has learned from creating the Contemporary Lampworking books and some things the magical material of glass can teach us about existence. The aim will be to encourage audience members in their own exploration of glass, art, and inner life.

Fun With Critters
There was a time when making glass animals was the way to make a living as a glassblower. Now making beads, jewelry and various types of functional glass are also options. But making animals is still a great way to learn techniques, as well as elements of design, self-organization and composition. This two-day class will use animal making as a vehicle to explore new ways to look at glass. You will learn tricks that can be added to your existing repertoire. All experience levels welcome; there will be something to learn for everyone, even experienced glass artists. Class#: HG-FR-63

The Squiggly Goblet
Curious about making goblets? This introductory class will take you through the basic steps, examining different approaches to the goblet-making process. The emphasis will be on finding the fun in goblets rather than developing a perfect technique, which takes more time than we have in class. We will cover the fundamentals to set you on the right path to making beautiful stemware with the minimum of stress, confusion or frustration. Each student will complete at least two small goblets, which are not required to be straight or even. Complete beginners welcome! Class#: HG-SA-63

“Contemporary Lampworking: A 30+ year Journey of Discovery”
Like many young glassblowers, Bandhu Dunham was disappointed by the lack of recognition for lampworking (aka flameworking) in the early studio glass movement. Interest was growing by the 1980s, but its potential was generally under-appreciated and little understood. Encouraged by other glassblowers and feeling called to fill a need, Bandhu found himself in the position to do something about it. If more people could safely and confidently experiment with the technique, it would perhaps earn the respect it deserved. A trail awaited blazing! The first edition of Contemporary Lampworking was self-published In 1995, after much experimentation, consultation and research. It was a DIY project that proved to have a big impact. There was hunger for relevant and accurate information on lampwork technique in a contemporary context. It also arrived at the perfect time to help support the exploding interest in beadmaking and pipemaking. Now in its Fourth Edition, at 640 pages Contemporary Lampworking is the most comprehensive text on this subject for artists, including authoritative information on studio set-up, safety, annealing and other technical matters. It is also meant to inspire and document the growth of this corner of the glass world, supporting future generations of trailblazers with encouraging words, accurate information and beautiful images. Bandhu will discuss his journey in researching and assembling what has become known as “the Bible of lampwork.” He has a few stories, and has learned inspiring and humbling lessons on the way. He has some helpful advice for young artists seeking recognition as well.
